Staff Biographies

2010 Season

 

Mary T. Murray - Director, a licensed educational psychologist, Mary has been directing Murray Camp for twenty-two years.  She has over twenty-five years of experience teaching elementary school and high school.  Mary is the director of latency age clinical activity programs for a child guidance clinic, west of Boston.  Mary's training includes Red Cross Water Safety Instruction (WSI). She directed academic year camps for Harvard University for many years prior to founding the Murray Camp in 1989.

Charles Bruno - A certified Massachusetts school teacher and senior class advisor, Chuck teaches high school in Lexington, MA. He has overseen programs for a children's guidance clinic outside of Boston. Chuck is a former coach for Newton, Massachusetts Soccer and Little League teams.  He enjoys playing basketball, playing guitar, traveling  and exploring Nantucket harbor in his Zodiac.  Chuck and Mary are the parents of two school-age children, both are attending and/ or working at the camp.

Laurie Winer Marcus - An artist and  full time art teacher in Manhattan, Laurie holds a Master’s Degree in Art Education from Columbia University Teachers College. Laurie holds teacher certifications as an Art Educator for grades K-12 as well as certification as a "Gifted" Art Educator. She has been directing Murray Camp's art program for the past 15 years. Laurie has worked extensively in clay.  Her work has been included in numerous group exhibits including the Cork Gallery at Lincoln Center. Laurie will be teaching various mediums to the children this summer providing numerous enriching artistic experiences. She is the mother of three, including one of our campers, Seth.

Avery Scoville - A middle school science teacher at Cardigan Mountain Prepatory School in New Canaan, Avery is also a dorm parent and coach at the school. Avery has experience with foster care placements and working in the child wefare system. He is certified Alpine Ski Coach. Avery is a graduate of St. Lawrence University, where he majored in Environmental Studies.

Sarah Graves - A sixth grade teacher at New Canaan Country School in Connecticut, Sarah coaches Middle School Field Hockey, Co-ed Ice Hockey, and Girl's Lacrosse. Her background includes lifeguarding, coaching and teaching children of various ages. Sarah has extensive experience working with children including being a full time dormitory parent and academic advisor at a boarding school in New Hampshire, last year.

Tim Leroy - A middle school math teacher at Cardigan Mountain Prepatory School in New Canaan, Tim is the Varsity Hockey and Soccer Coach at Cardigan. Tim's experience includes being the dean of students or Cardigan's summer school. He is a graduate of St. Lawrence University Tim enjoys working with youth and instructing youth with skills in soccer, hockey, tennis, baseball and swiiming.

Kaylan Melville - A Red Cross certified lifeguard from Peabody, Kaylan is a doctorate student at Northeastern University in Boston working toward her degree in Physical Therapy. In addition to her studies, Kaylan spent this past year working as a personal trainer at the Equinox Club in Boston. She enjoys participating in triathalons and promoting physical fitness opportiunioties for children. She has many years experience teaching swimming lessons and working with children.

Marcia Hempel – Marcia  is trained in Eurythmics for young children from the Longy School of Music and in singing games from Mary Alice and Peter Amidon. She has been teaching Eurythmics to our youngest campers for several years. Her songs and dances result in delight for all involved. Marcia is the music director at the Unitarian Church on the island.  She is the founder and director of the Nantucket Women's Chorus. Marcia teaches piano, organ and voice.

Mara Weiner - Mara is a Red Cross certified lifeguard from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Mara is a student at Miami University. She is a life long Nantucket summer resident who has been attending or working at Murray camp since she was five years old. Mara enjoys all sports especially tennis, volleyball and ballet. Mara is wonderful with children and enjoys babysitting.

Max Krasnoff - A student at the University of New Hampshire, Max is from Holliston, MA. Max is studying Environmental Outdoor Education. He enjoys all sports and playing the guitar. Max has experience working as an activities counselor with young children.

Chloe Coggins - Chloe is a lifelong Nantucket summer resident from Norwell, MA. Chloe has attended and/or been employed by Murray Camp since she was a toddler, when her mom was one of the camp's sailing instructors. Chloe is a Red Cross certified lifeguard who enjoys all sports and Arts & Crafts. She is magical with children and enjoys babysitting.

Skylar Pinchal - Another former Murray Camper, Skyler is from Houston, Texas. She enjoys skating, music, swimming and yoga. She has taught children's swimming lessons, tutored, and has extensive experience babysitting.

Alli Kaye - A student at the University of Pennsylvania, Alli is a Red Cross certified lifeguard from Wayland, MA. who grew up attending Murray Camp. Alli has been a tutor in math, French, and English, and has experience coaching her school's freshman field hockey team. Alli participated in Tenacity, a program in Boston providing reading enrichment and tennis skillsto inner city youth. Alli enjoys children of all ages.

Robert Alper, A high school student at Beaver Country Day School, Robert grew up attending Murray Camp. He is from Newton, MA. Robert has experience babysitting and is very patient and encouraging with young children. Robert enjoys music production. He has his own start up business playing music at summer functions on the island and in the Boston area.

Liam Bruno, A student at Newton North High School, Liam has grown up attending Murray Camp. Liam enjoys playing basketball, football and soccer. Liam enjoys teaching swimming and sports to campers. He is very patient and frequently sought out by the campers to play sports games.

Bryn Batchelder, A student at Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Bryn grew up attending Murray Camp along with her three siblings. Bryn enjoys swimming, softball, basketball and running. Bryn is very sweet with young children and is looking forward to helping out with the 4-6 year old program this summer.

Madison Duce, A student at Nantucket High School, Madison grew up attending Murray Camp along with her two siblings. Madison enjoys playing softball, hockey and Field hockey. She is a proficient swimmer and ice skater. Madison is a recent graduate of the Nantucket New School. She is mature, sweet and has extensive babysitting experience.

Anna Lane, A student at Montclair Kimberly Academy from Saddle River, New Jersey, Anna is a former Murray camper who attended the camp with her four siblings. Anna enjoys swimming and playing volleyball. She has experience babysitting including working weekly in the infant room at her former school; The Village School in Waldwick, New Jersey. She is very sweet and friendly toward the children. Anna will be working with the 4-6 year old group of campers this summer.

Seamus Bruno, A student at Newton North High School, Seamus has grown up attending Murray Camp. This is his second season working at the camp. Seamus plays basketball and soccer for Newton North High School. He is also a competitive athlete with AAU basketball, playing this past year for both the Boston Warriors and the Middlesex Magic teams. Seamus has babysitting experience with his seven young male cousins ranging in age from one to ten. He is frequently the entertainment host for the group and is sought after by all of the boys, frequently.

Farrell Duce, A student at Nantucket New School, Farrell grew up attending Murray Camp along with her two siblings. Farrell has an extensive figure skating background. She is currently playing on a Nantucket Girls Softball team which her dad coaches. Farrell enjoys entertaining our young campers and can be easily found, always smiling!

In addition to our full-time staff, we also subcontract two lifeguards from the Community Pool, two tennis instructors from the Parks & Recreation Department, and the crew of the sailing vessel "Endeavor".

 

The Friendship Sloop Endeavor has been offering sailing charters in Nantucket for 25 years.  The Endeavor is a Coast Guard Certified Vessel inspected each spring by the United States Coast Guard.  The crew of the “Endeavor” is required by the Coast Guard to participate in a random drug-testing program.

 

The route the Endeavor takes is typically out through the jetties and in the Nantucket Sound.  The vessel is no more than three miles from shore at any point in the trip.

 

Captain James Genthner has been operating the Endeavor in Nantucket for the entire 24 years.  He is a Coast Guard Licensed Captain and has been sailing for 30 years. Himself and his wife Sue reside on the island year round with their two elementary school age children.
